Our Story
A desire for a healthier, more balanced lifestyle led Matcha Cafe Kyoto owner and founder, Susan Tao, to begin drinking matcha daily as an alternative to higher caffeine beverages. She quickly developed a passion for the drink and wanted to share her experience with others. It wasn't long before she was traveling to Japan to learn more about matcha culture and the significance of the Tea Ceremony in Japanese communities.
What she found sparked her passion and a desire to open a high quality Matcha cafe in her hometown Salt Lake City to share the experience of Japanese Matcha culture. Susan connected with a certified Tea Ceremony Master and over the next years would make two more trips to Japan to gain a deeper understanding of matcha and traditional japanese desserts.​

On one trip Susan spent weeks learning how to make fresh mochi, red bean paste and Japanese jellies. She learned techniques and gathered traditional recipes to create the foundation of Matcha Cafe Kyoto's menu. Although U.S. dealers made many types of matcha powder available at home, Susan's passion drove her to go back to Japan and spend three more weeks visiting matcha farms and producers, tasting and testing over 60 types of matcha powders to find the very best 100% organic ceremonial grade matcha powder for her shop.
